{"id":5158,"date":"2010-08-04T13:43:44","date_gmt":"2010-08-04T18:43:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dobermandan.com\/?p=5158"},"modified":"2010-08-04T13:46:39","modified_gmt":"2010-08-04T18:46:39","slug":"stupid-ad-smart-ad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/stupid-ad-smart-ad\/","title":{"rendered":"Stupid Ad &#8211; Smart Ad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday, 4:33 PM<\/p>\n<p>Dear Friend,<\/p>\n<p>Today I&#8217;m introducing a new little segment I&#8217;m calling &#8220;Stupid Ad &#8211; Smart Ad&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>(If this gets popular&#8230; I&#8217;ll have a never-ending supply of stupid ads to choose from.)<\/p>\n<p>I got both these ads out of a recent issue of <em>Muscular Development<\/em>, one of the largest magazines in the bodybuilding niche.<\/p>\n<p>When I say &#8220;largest&#8221;, I mean it. This magazine has about 400 pages in every issue. And I think about 75% of them are advertising.<\/p>\n<p>It is REALLY tough to stand out in this magazine and get your ad noticed. Practically impossible&#8230; unless you have the advertising budget to run two to six-page spreads like the big boys.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve successfully competed in this magazine for years with a minuscule ad budget (compared to the big boys)&#8230; but I&#8217;m going to keep <em>that<\/em> secret to myself for a while.<\/p>\n<p>Ain&#8217;t I a stinker? \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Anyhoo&#8230; the stupid ad is what they used to call a &#8220;double truck&#8221;&#8230; a two-page spread.<\/p>\n<p>As far as &#8220;stupid&#8221; goes, this ranks up there as one of the stupidest I&#8217;ve ever seen in this niche&#8230; or almost any niche for that matter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Here&#8217;s a thumbnail of Stupid Ad page 1. <br \/><\/strong>(You can see the full size by clicking on it.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dobermandan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Stupid-Ad-Page-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5161\" title=\"Universal-Stupid-Ad-Page-1\" src=\"https:\/\/dobermandan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Stupid-Ad-Page-1-209x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Stupid-Ad-Page-1-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Stupid-Ad-Page-1-716x1024.jpg 716w, https:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Stupid-Ad-Page-1.jpg 1470w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>And here&#8217;s a thumbnail of Stupid Ad page 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/dobermandan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Stupid-Ad-Page-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5162\" title=\"Universal-Stupid-Ad-Page-2\" src=\"https:\/\/dobermandan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Stupid-Ad-Page-2-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Stupid-Ad-Page-2-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Stupid-Ad-Page-2-732x1024.jpg 732w, https:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Stupid-Ad-Page-2.jpg 1506w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The reason it doesn&#8217;t win the &#8220;Stupidest Ad of All Time&#8221; award is because they DO have some kind of response device. They&#8217;ve done their best to hide it at the bottom and make it really hard to read&#8230; but at least it&#8217;s there.<\/p>\n<p>They wasted two full pages with absolutely ZERO information about their product&#8230; with nothing but a pathetically weak, almost <em>hidden<\/em> call to action. He&#8217;s a student of the classic direct response masters.<\/p>\n<p>He has studied Caples, Robert Collier, Kennedy, Lasker, Ogilvy, Halbert, Karbo and a bunch of the old time mail order guys.<\/p>\n<p>He invested his time learning the timeless principles of selling and direct response marketing&#8230; and ignored all the goofball flunkies selling Internet Marketing &#8220;bright shiny object&#8221; products&#8230; who are completely clueless about the timeless principles of direct response selling.<\/p>\n<p>This guy is doing a LOT of things right.<\/p>\n<p>The copy helps sets him apart from all the hundreds of other advertisers in the magazine&#8230; and that is NOT an easy task!<\/p>\n<p>Actually, I&#8217;m kinda surprised the magazine even allowed him to run this. Read the copy on the second page and you&#8217;ll see what I mean.<\/p>\n<p>This guy has B-A-L-L-S!<\/p>\n<p>And for that, I have R-E-S-P-E-C-T!<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s making a very common mistake that is probably costing him a lot of money&#8230; but compared to most of the other advertisers in the magazine, this guy gets a Doberman Dan &#8220;gold star&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Wanna know how the stupid advertiser can continue to make money with crappy ads?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s simple&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>He Owns The Media!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Universal, the company that makes the Animal Pak&#8230; the product featured in the almost hidden teensy-tiny print at the bottom of the stupid ad&#8230; owns <em>Muscular Development<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>They can advertise for free!<\/p>\n<p>Now here&#8217;s an advanced math question for you:<\/p>\n<p>If your ad costs are ZERO&#8230; how many sales do you need to break even or make money on your ad?<\/p>\n<p>And if other people pay you to put ads in your magazine, how much out-of-pocket have you invested to create the magazine and distribute it to the world?<\/p>\n<p>Nothing&#8230; nada&#8230; zero&#8230; ZIP!<\/p>\n<p>Not a bad deal, huh?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s good to be the king of your own media. It puts you in the &#8220;tollbooth position&#8221;&#8230; and everybody who wants to pass through your tollbooth has to pay you.<\/p>\n<p>AND&#8230; you also get to promote your own products.<\/p>\n<p>How can you own your own media?<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few ideas for you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Build your own e-mail list of subscribers or &#8220;raving fans&#8221;&#8230;<\/strong>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start your own blog&#8230;<\/strong>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Publish your own OFFLINE newsletter and build a snail mail list of subscribers and raving fans.<\/strong> (This is at least 10 times more valuable than an e-mail list&#8230; in terms of prospect quality, lifetime customer value and resale value of your business.)\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start a membership website&#8230;<\/strong>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start your own magazine<\/strong> (Sure, it&#8217;s pretty cost prohibitive but I have friends who have done it and enjoy international fame and recognition. That&#8217;s pretty cool, huh?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;s just a few ideas.<\/p>\n<p>In my most humble (but accurate) opinion, just because you own the media doesn&#8217;t mean you should slack off and run crappy ads.<\/p>\n<p>Back when it was still owned by Bill and Shawn Phillips, EAS not only owned their own media&#8230; but they had completely &#8220;kick boo-tay&#8221; ads, too.<\/p>\n<p>They were a great example of how to maximize profitability by owning your own media, providing highly valuable cutting-edge content&#8230; AND running killer direct response ads for their own products written by some of the best copywriters in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Last I checked it worked out pretty well for those guys.<\/p>\n<p>Hey, I gotta run.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you enjoyed this.
