After more than a half a century living in exile in this \u201cvalley of tears\u201d… I\u2019ve finally come to a monumentally big breakthrough…<\/p>\n

The Trappist monks are really on to something.<\/p>\n

Because it seems to me that the more I just shut my big trap (get it?… trap… Trappist monks?), the better off everything — and everybody<\/em> — is in my life.<\/p>\n

In fact, based on the response from my \u201cPS\u201d yesterday, if I just shut up and never mail this list again… almost nobody would miss me.<\/p>\n

And I\u2019m OK with that. Because I\u2019m deliberately speaking less and less these days.<\/p>\n

As little as possible, as a matter of fact.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve even been keeping track of it. In almost all of my personal communications, it\u2019s about 80\/20. And in many cases, 90\/10.<\/p>\n

In other words, the other person speaks 80 percent of the time and me 20 percent.<\/p>\n

Or, in the case of my phone conversations with almost all of my friends and business contacts, it\u2019s 90 percent them talking and 10 percent me.<\/p>\n

Or sometimes 95\/5.<\/p>\n

In the past I would have tried to butt in as often as possible. Ya know, I gotta get my point across, right?<\/p>\n

No… no I don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Nobody… and I do mean nobody<\/em>… gives a rat\u2019s pitootey about my point, my thoughts or my feelings. They just want to be heard and understood.<\/p>\n

In fact, people are dying<\/em> (literally) to be heard and understood.<\/p>\n

And that really<\/em> means this:<\/p>\n

They\u2019re dying to be loved.<\/p>\n

And it appears that I\u2019ve been the one chosen to love them.<\/p>\n

So I\u2019m happy to just shut up.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s kinda funny. The other day I spoke with a lifelong friend for over an hour. I\u2019m not exaggerating when I say that I maybe spoke a grand total of 30 words.<\/p>\n

He only asked one question of me, \u201cSo how have YOU been?\u201d<\/p>\n

I responded, \u201cI\u2019m doing OK.\u201d<\/p>\n

And then he was off to the races again.<\/p>\n

The next day he texted me and thanked me from the bottom of his heart for speaking with him. He said, \u201cOur conversation was SO inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n

How, pray tell, did I inspire him?<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

Listening with love.<\/p>\n

You see, my \u201cconversations\u201d are not really conversations at all. It\u2019s just me just shutting my big pie hole.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the point of all this?<\/p>\n

There is no point. Because, as I\u2019ve suspected for quite some time… and have now confirmed from yesterday\u2019s email when I asked you a small favor that would have taken a grand total of 5 seconds… nobody on this list is listening anyways.<\/p>\n

So no, there\u2019s no point.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, it\u2019s just dumbass, doddering Doberman Dan running his big yap again about stuff that nobody cares about.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Except for maybe the truly infinitesimal souls left on this planet who aspire to sainthood by overcoming the most heinous sin on earth…<\/p>\n

Not loving enough.<\/p>\n

P.S. As much as I\u2019d like to be rid of them… as long as I\u2019m still forced to live in exile, sending up my \u201csighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears\u201d (I\u2019m curious if there\u2019s anybody left on this earth who gets that reference)… I still have two bad habits I gotta support:<\/p>\n

Sleeping indoors and eating. (Although later this week I\u2019m gonna give up that second habit for 7 to 10 days.)<\/p>\n
