Back when I was a rookie on the police department I was the first responder on the scene of an industrial accident.<\/p>\n

Some poor bastard fell into this big machine and it crushed his legs.<\/p>\n

Even worse, his legs were stuck inside the machine and he was still alive… screaming in pain.<\/p>\n

I had the wonderful opportunity of holding on to his hand and calmly telling him he was going to be alright. Because the fire department was on the way to get him out.<\/p>\n

Actually I highly doubted he would still be alive by the time they arrived.<\/p>\n

And if he were still alive, after they got him out, he\u2019d WISH he were dead.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the saddest part:<\/p>\n

This guy lost his legs… for a measly $15 an hour job.<\/p>\n

He had to risk his life every day in that factory for a miserable little $15 an hour.<\/p>\n

And look how he wound up.<\/p>\n

For $15 an hour.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever be able to get that image out of my head of me holding his hand while he\u2019s screaming in pain with his legs crushed in that machine.<\/p>\n

And I wonder what dreams he had…<\/p>\n

…what passions he wanted to pursue…<\/p>\n

…what kind of life he wanted to create…<\/p>\n

…instead of being stuck in a dank, miserable factory selling his life for $15 an hour.<\/p>\n

Aaaaahhh… there, but for the grace of God, go I.<\/p>\n

You see, that was my future, too.<\/p>\n

Sure, not a miserable factory.<\/p>\n

Something worse.<\/p>\n

A life in uniform haunting the still riot-ravaged inner city streets of West Dayton, Ohio.<\/p>\n
