Once upon a time in a dodgy Miami neighborhood lived our protagonist, Sir Dan of Doberman.<\/p>\n

A proven way to start a story, right?<\/p>\n

But since this story is about me, it\u2019s kinda stupid to write in third person.<\/p>\n

So I won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Anyhoo… in 2004 I was recently back in the good ole U.S. of A. Something I said I would never do.<\/p>\n

In a moment\u2019s notice I had left a DREAM life in Costa Rica, abandoned my home and put all my material possessions in storage to move to Miami.<\/p>\n

What prompted me to make such a stupid financial and personal decision?<\/p>\n

Gary Halbert.<\/p>\n

You see, Gary had moved into my spare bedroom in Costa Rica for a few months while we were working on projects together.<\/p>\n

But then he decided he wanted to move back to Miami.<\/p>\n

Since one of his clients had just cut a mid 5-figure check for us to whore out our minds and write him some copy…<\/p>\n

…Gary decided that it would be in my best interests to uproot myself from my home and move to Miami with him.<\/p>\n

And since he was a master artist of persuasion, who could say no to the famous Gary Halbert?<\/p>\n

So there I was in Miami with a new wife just arrived from Colombia… and all the bureaucratic immigration nightmares that go along with that…<\/p>\n

…I had no place to live…<\/p>\n

…and news arrived that all my earthly possessions in storage in Costa Rica (including a priceless guitar I LOVED) were all stolen.<\/p>\n

(God bless Latin America. Where \u201cwhat\u2019s mine is mine… and what\u2019s yours is mine, too.\u201d)<\/p>\n

Hey… at least I had the gig with Halbert and his new client, right? I could count on that income while I found a new place to live.<\/p>\n

How \u2018bout noooooo.<\/p>\n

Our monthly 5-figure check writing \u201cI\u2019ve got enough projects to keep you guys busy for the next year\u201d client decided to pull the plug.<\/p>\n

So I had no income…<\/p>\n

…I was in a new city (and a very hostile one, BTW) with no place to live…<\/p>\n

…I had a few hundred bucks credit left on a MasterCard…<\/p>\n

…and thanks to a series of poor decisions, I had ZERO savings. (Although I enjoyed every MINUTE of pissing that money away in Costa Rica.)<\/p>\n

Oh yeah… there were no friends or family members who would even CONSIDER bailing me out. They were all broke, too. (And sadly, will die broke.)<\/p>\n

And even if I wanted to get a job, the only skill I have is the ability to shoot man sized targets in the head at 1,000 meters.<\/p>\n

Oh… and play the guitar.<\/p>\n

One of those skills can only guarantee employment with heinous criminals.<\/p>\n

The other skill only pays about $50 a night and guarantees an existence of sleeping under a bridge and eating out of dumpsters.<\/p>\n

So… what would YOU do in a desperate situation like that?<\/p>\n

Well I\u2019ll tell you what *I* did:<\/p>\n

I grabbed a yellow legal pad and blue pen and \u201cwrote\u201d myself a quick $40,000.<\/p>\n

No, I didn\u2019t prostitute myself and whore out my mind to the highest bidder.<\/p>\n

I identified a want in a particular marketplace and wrote a sales letter for that product.<\/p>\n

I used the credit left on my MasterCard for printing and postage and \u201chired\u201d the U.S. Postal Service to deliver my sales letter (for pennies… LITERALLY) to a small list of people most likely to buy it.<\/p>\n

Less than 10 days later, an extra $40k appeared in my checking account as if by magic.<\/p>\n
