I never wanted to be a cop, a direct response copywriter and serial entrepreneur…<\/p>\n

\u2026or ANY of the other things I\u2019ve done to make money to support my bad habits of sleeping indoors and having food with my meals.<\/p>\n

Nope.<\/p>\n

The ONLY thing I\u2019ve ever wanted to do with my life since age 7 was be a musician.<\/p>\n

And I guess I had a talent for it.<\/p>\n

Even as a 7-year old, I played and sang all over the town of Barberton, Ohio.<\/p>\n

I heard the word \u201cprodigy\u201d a lot from the adults. I didn\u2019t really understand it\u2026 but I knew it was something good.<\/p>\n

In my senior year of high school, our school jazz band went to a regional competition.<\/p>\n

The big carrot at this gig was a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston that would be awarded to the best musician there.<\/p>\n

Now if you don\u2019t know, Berklee is one of the best\u2026 probably THE best school for modern music. What Julliard is to classical music, Berklee is to modern music. And it\u2019s damn hard to get in. (At least it was back then.)<\/p>\n

To make a long story short, I won the scholarship.<\/p>\n

And boy oh boy, was I excited.<\/p>\n

It was for the grand sum of $5,000.<\/p>\n

That may not sound like a lot now\u2026 but with inflation factored in, that $5000 scholarship is equivalent to approximately $20,000 in today\u2019s money.<\/p>\n

So to an 18-year-old kid who never made more than $3.35\/hour, a $5,000 scholarship was a LOT of money. Surely, that would cover four years at Berklee.<\/p>\n

Uuuhhh, no.<\/p>\n

That scholarship wouldn\u2019t have even covered tuition and books for one semester. And God knows how I would have paid for living expenses in the expensive city of Boston.<\/p>\n

Now, for many of my peers, this wouldn\u2019t have been a problem.<\/p>\n

If their kid had been accepted into the best music school in the world, the parents would\u2019ve had the money to cover the balance\u2026 or could have borrowed it.<\/p>\n

Not my family.<\/p>\n

We were flat broke.<\/p>\n

We lived a lower middle class existence.<\/p>\n

I was told that\u2019s the way it always was\u2026 and would always be. (Isn\u2019t that great mental programming to hear when you\u2019re growing up?)<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t know it at the time but we even qualified for food stamps. But my mother always believed in hard work\u2026 and NEVER accepted a hand out from the looting gummint.<\/p>\n

You see, she grew up in REAL poverty.<\/p>\n

Mississippi poverty.<\/p>\n

And you ain\u2019t seen poverty until ya done seen Mississippi poverty.<\/p>\n

She went without shoes for months at a time when she was a kid. Food was pretty scarce, too. Not exactly the best \u201craising\u201d for a kid, is it?<\/p>\n

What’s the point of my lamentations?<\/p>\n

See, even though I had been accepted into the best music college in the world, there was no way I was going to be able to go.<\/p>\n

Because of lack of money.<\/p>\n

Let me tell you\u2026 that was a huge lesson for me at a young age.<\/p>\n

And I\u2019ve NEVER forgotten the feeling of disappointment I had.<\/p>\n

Hell, I STILL have it. It remains the biggest regret of my life.<\/p>\n

Anyhoo\u2026 instead of me still stewing over something that happened almost 33 years ago\u2026 let me make my point:<\/p>\n

What disappointments and regrets do YOU have that were caused by lack of money?<\/p>\n

What disappointments and regrets do your children have because of your lack of money?<\/p>\n

How many times have you had to look at your wife… and see the disillusionment in her eyes when you told her…<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m\u00a0sorry but we can\u2019t afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n

How much longer will you put up with money controlling you instead of YOU controlling money?<\/p>\n

Listen, I don\u2019t want ANYBODY to feel the deep down \u201ckicked in the gut\u201d pain of regret I felt when I didn\u2019t have enough money to go to Berklee.<\/p>\n

Especially when you don\u2019t have to put up with being broke and working in a job that doesn\u2019t give you the fulfillment you want.<\/p>\n

P.S. Yes, I still wonder what my life would\u2019ve been like had I gone to Berklee.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m pretty sure it would be drastically different.<\/p>\n

But it turned out really good.<\/p>\n

Because I learned some high value skills that guarantee I\u2019ll never be broke again.<\/p>\n
