That\u2019s what it feels like inside my head just about every time I sit down to write.<\/p>\n

So I should be the stereotypical melancholy writer.<\/p>\n

And since half my family is Irish I should be the stereotypical melancholy DRUNK writer.<\/p>\n

Quite the opposite. I\u2019m really glad I learned how to write.<\/p>\n

To be totally accurate I should have said I\u2019m really glad I\u2019m LEARNING how to write.<\/p>\n

Writing makes you look closely at life, as life slowly staggers by.<\/p>\n

Or other times when it whizzes past you faster than your human eyes can take it in.<\/p>\n

Writers examine and analyze life much more closely than the civilians.<\/p>\n

And that can be quite enlightening at times.<\/p>\n

Occasionally depressing, too.<\/p>\n

However, what you discover by holding life up to the light and examining it with insatiable curiosity… can allow you to write yourself just about any size check you desire.<\/p>\n

Or write others rich.<\/p>\n

Good writing is about telling the truth.<\/p>\n

And humans are dying for the truth.<\/p>\n

When you write the truth you stand head and shoulders above the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

But after a few days in front of your computer, telling the truth in an engaging way turns out to be about as easy and pleasurable as making love to a porcupine.<\/p>\n

With rabies.<\/p>\n

And a really bad case of crabs.<\/p>\n

So here\u2019s a tip that just might make it a teeny tiny bit less painful:<\/p>\n

Write down all the stuff you told yourself you\u2019d never share with ANYONE.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when the honesty happens.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019ll probably scare the living crap outta you.<\/p>\n

Just breathe.<\/p>\n

And quiet your mind so you can hear what that still, small voice has to say… instead of those other ones. The voices of anxiety, judgment, self-hate and guilt.<\/p>\n

Then start to connect some words together.<\/p>\n

When you deeply desire to communicate with your fellow human beings…<\/p>\n

…to preserve moments of joy…<\/p>\n

…to make people and situations, both real and imagined, come alive…<\/p>\n

…to express the contents of your heart that your mouth would never let you share…<\/p>\n

…it will happen for you.<\/p>\n

But you can\u2019t just meditate and make this happen.<\/p>\n

It happens from persistence and hard work.<\/p>\n

So why wait any longer?<\/p>\n
