There\u2019s a small town in Pennsylvania called Roseto.<\/p>\n

Many years ago, this tiny town was entirely populated with immigrants from the same area of Italy.<\/p>\n

Not just the people. Their entire culture had been transplanted there.<\/p>\n

The entire town had a very cohesive sense of community.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s an interesting little factoid:<\/p>\n

Roseto had an amazing health record.<\/p>\n

Despite the prevalence of several high-risk health factors in the community \u2013 smoking, economic stress, high-carb\/high fat diets \u2013 the \u00a0people of Roseto had a heart-attack rate less than half of neighboring towns.<\/p>\n

From 1954 to 1961, Roseto had nearly no heart attacks in the high-risk group, men 55 to 64.<\/p>\n

And men over 65 enjoyed a death rate of 1% while the national average was 2%.<\/p>\n

Widowers outnumbered widows, too.<\/p>\n

It seemed like a virtual fountain of youth, with a heart attack mortality rate roughly half the rate of every surrounding community.<\/p>\n

Same water, same neighborhood, same occupational mix, same income level ranges, same races.<\/p>\n

So what was the difference and why?<\/p>\n

This \u201cfountain of youth\u201d lasted an entire generation until the cohesiveness of the town broke up.<\/p>\n

The younger people didn\u2019t carry on the sense of community like their parents and grandparents.<\/p>\n

Soon after, it began to resemble a typical modern American town \u2013 just a bunch of emotionally isolated individuals living in close proximity.<\/p>\n

As soon as Roseto was no longer coherent, the heart-attack rate quickly escalated to that of its neighboring towns.<\/p>\n

And THAT, dear reader is the power of association and \u201cconnectedness\u201d with other human beings who support you.<\/p>\n
