I started reading \u201cEffortless Mastery\u201d again this weekend.<\/p>\n

For about the seventh time.<\/p>\n

And I guess I\u2019ll have to read it seven times more before I get it.<\/p>\n

Or 70.<\/p>\n

Or more likely…<\/p>\n

I\u2019m gonna have to keep reading it until I die.<\/p>\n

Cuz I may NEVER totally get it.<\/p>\n

\u201cEffortless Mastery\u201d was a book originally written for musicians. And boy oh boy was it ever needed. I\u2019ve never seen more “screwed up in the head” people than musicians.<\/p>\n

On one side we have the hacks with an ego the size of Texas who think they\u2019re the best player in the world.<\/p>\n

On the other side we have the truly brilliant players who are always just one step away from suicide because they think they suck so bad.<\/p>\n

The perfectionists who never allow themselves a moment of joy in creating music. Because they\u2019re too busy beating themselves up about their perceived lack of abilities.<\/p>\n

I can tell ya this, my friend…<\/p>\n

Life is completely and utterly miserable for the people in the \u201cperfectionist\u201d camp. I STILL have to escape it every day.<\/p>\n

Sometimes every minute.<\/p>\n

Because it continues to pull me back into its prison.<\/p>\n

So imagine my surprise when Kenny Werner, the author of \u201cEffortless Mastery\u201d said this:<\/p>\n

\u201cHow does one achieve that level of musicianship — of humanness<\/em>? How does one evolve into a riveting presence so worthy of praise? Limited goals, such as trying to impress people, find security, play \u2018valid\u2019 jazz, and so on, block that goal. Surrender is the key, and the first thing to surrender is one of your most prized possessions: YOUR OBSESSIVE NEED TO SOUND GOOD! This is a paradox that most people can prove through their own experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

In that moment I realized that\u2019s EXACTLY what I had done in my business life…<\/p>\n

I had surrendered my obsessive need to “sound good.”<\/p>\n

For nine straight years, EVERY business I put my hand to failed.<\/p>\n

No, it wasn\u2019t like they started working and later failed. None of them EVER started working.<\/p>\n

Not one single business made a dime. Or even experienced ANY kind of success.<\/p>\n

Nine long years… at least 3 businesses a year… not one single business EVER got off the ground.<\/p>\n

So I stopped trying to \u201csound good\u201d and just continued creating.<\/p>\n

Perfectionism be damned.<\/p>\n

(If you\u2019ve read any of my \u201cready, fire, aim\u201d promotions then you know I STILL do that quite often with my copy. And these daily emails.)<\/p>\n

Listen, there are people receiving this very message who say they\u2019re\u00a0an \u201cInternet marketer\u201d… or copywriter… or entrepreneur… or whatever they define themselves as…<\/p>\n

…but they have never actually created and\u00a0released anything.<\/p>\n

Because of their obsessive need to “sound good.”<\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Oh sure, we could blame perfectionism. But that\u2019s just a symptom. It\u2019s not the root cause.<\/p>\n

The REAL problem is…<\/p>\n

FEAR.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve allowed it to paralyze them.<\/p>\n

Which is pretty illogical when you stop and think of it.<\/p>\n

After all, what they\u2019re allowing to keep them broke and stuck in a life of quiet desperation is a mere illusion they created in their own mind.<\/p>\n

There really is nothing to fear.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve got 30 years in this entrepreneur thang. Nine initial years of serial\u00a0entrepreneurial failure… and now 21 years in direct\u00a0response…<\/p>\n

…and I\u2019m here to tell you…<\/p>\n

…NOTHING but good will come\u00a0from starting that business you\u2019ve been talking about for so\u00a0long.<\/p>\n

Did you hear me?<\/p>\n

Nothing but GOOD will come from it.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s say the worst-case scenario happens:<\/p>\n

You go broke, you lose everything and you\u2019re homeless.<\/p>\n

And EVERYBODY abandons you. Including your family.<\/p>\n

(Except your wonderful gift from God… your Doberman.)<\/p>\n

And you and your dog have to live in your piece of shit Ford Taurus you bought for $1,500 and eat 99 cent cans of tuna.<\/p>\n

I will repeat myself…<\/p>\n

There are very few things in life I\u2019m sure of anymore.<\/p>\n

Except\u00a0this:<\/p>\n

Nothing but GOOD will come from it.<\/p>\n

And I know. Because exactly what I just described happened to me.<\/p>\n

And it was the best thing that ever happened to me in my entire life.<\/p>\n

\u2018Cuz a mere four months later… after becoming homeless and living in my car with Donner the Doberman…<\/p>\n

I was making 6-figures a month.<\/p>\n

But the money wasn\u2019t the REAL reward. It was just a scorecard.<\/p>\n

The REAL reward was who I became in the process.<\/p>\n

A dude the world tried to beat to death.<\/p>\n

And damn near did.<\/p>\n

But I got up.<\/p>\n

And fought.<\/p>\n

And discovered this:<\/p>\n

There is nothing to fear.<\/p>\n

So I gave up trying to \u201csound good\u201d and just got on with the business of DOING.<\/p>\n

And you know the rest of the story:<\/p>\n

Now I\u2019m rich and famous and everything I touch turns to gold.<\/p>\n

Ummmm… how about noooo. (Spoken with my best Dr. Evil voice.)<\/p>\n

Out of every 10 things I try, 7 of them crash and burn.<\/p>\n

My track record is better these days. Twenty-one years ago when\u00a0I discovered direct response,\u00a098 or 99 out of every 100 things I tried crashed and burned.<\/p>\n

Maybe you bought into the publicity and thought almost everything I do makes a million bucks.<\/p>\n

If only.<\/p>\n

I fail on a VERY regular basis.<\/p>\n

When some of my projects crash and burn, the fiery disaster is pretty spectacular.<\/p>\n

I often watch in wonder, enjoying the catastrophe and fireworks.<\/p>\n

Hell… even ADMIRE it.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s like getting to witness the demolition of a grand structure. Like the Empire State building.<\/p>\n

And I rejoice.<\/p>\n

Cuz I know what follows the biggest failures are the biggest successes.<\/p>\n

Look, I\u2019m no Tony Robbins.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not trying to motivate you.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve learned I can\u2019t motivate anybody but myself.<\/p>\n

So I no longer try.<\/p>\n

Today I\u2019m just merely stating facts.<\/p>\n

Facts I\u2019m as sure of as I\u2019m sure the sun will rise tomorrow…<\/p>\n

Nothing but good will come from \u201csurrendering your obsessive need to sound good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Believe me, I was NOT a happy person during my nine straight years of entrepreneurial failures. (That was a big part of the problem.)<\/p>\n

And it’s EXTREMELY difficult to go through this alone.<\/p>\n

Truth be told… it\u2019s damn near IMPOSSIBLE to successfully start a business alone.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re going to struggle a lot more than you have to…<\/p>\n

… and wait a LOT longer to make money.<\/p>\n

So why do that when there\u2019s no need to?<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve provided a way for you to get through the learning curve and get to the money making part a LOT faster.<\/p>\n
