The U.S. Powerball jackpot was up to a record $1.6 billion this week.<\/p>\n

Since I\u2019m on a \u201cnews fast\u201d (BTW, it\u2019s not really news… it\u2019s fiction) the only reason I know about the Powerball is the gas pump screen told me last night.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t care less.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t like the lottery mindset.<\/p>\n

It brainwashes people into thinking that money falls from the sky.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Money comes from creating value. The more value you create, the more money you make.<\/p>\n

And plunking down a few bucks to buy a lotto ticket doesn\u2019t create value. It only enriches the state. (As if they don\u2019t already get enough by stealing.)<\/p>\n

I view the lottery as a tax on the stupid. And the\u00a0people choosing to pay it are the ones who can least afford\u00a0it.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve voiced those beliefs to the Colombiana.<\/p>\n

A lot.<\/p>\n

So imagine my surprise when I saw her at the lottery counter the other night when we were grocery shopping.<\/p>\n

(For the record, we didn\u2019t win. But I\u2019d say that even if we did.)<\/p>\n

There was quite a line of people waiting for their chance to win the $1.6 billion Powerball. So to kill some time while I waited for the Colombiana to piss away her cash, I started doing an informal survey.<\/p>\n

I asked anybody who would listen the following question:<\/p>\n

What would you do if you won the Powerball?<\/p>\n

I was shocked with the answers.<\/p>\n

Sure, a few people talked about buying private islands and fleets of Ferraris.<\/p>\n

All of them said they would leave their jobs. No surprise there.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what DID surprise me:<\/p>\n

A lot of them said they would help friends, family and\/or charities.<\/p>\n

And most of them said they would finally pursue their passions… writing, composing music, taking singing lessons, riding horses, playing golf, traveling, etc.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s why this surprised me…<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t need $1.6 billion to do ANY of those things.<\/p>\n

In fact, even if you only make minimum wage you could pursue your passion. In most cases it doesn\u2019t take any money at all. Or very little.<\/p>\n

You want to be a writer?<\/p>\n

Grab a piece of paper and pen and write. BAM! You\u2019re a
\nwriter.<\/p>\n

You want to help friends, family or charities?<\/p>\n

Help them! You don\u2019t need money for that.<\/p>\n

You want to compose music?<\/p>\n

Hum a tune and record it on your iPhone. There! \u00a0You\u2019re a composer.<\/p>\n

You want to travel?<\/p>\n

You can get a bus ticket to almost anywhere in the states for $100 bucks or less.<\/p>\n

Yes, it\u2019s that simple.<\/p>\n

How sad it is that so many people are putting off what they really want to do.<\/p>\n

Until \u201csomeday.\u201d<\/p>\n

An undefined point in the future when some \u201canointing\u201d…<\/p>\n

…some \u201clevel\u201d of success…<\/p>\n

…or some arbitrary amount of money is accumulated.<\/p>\n

When the truth is they could be doing it NOW.<\/p>\n

All it takes is a decision to start taking action.<\/p>\n

Consistently.<\/p>\n

Sure, I like making money.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019ve engineered my life so I can make money (sometimes a LOT of it) while still being able to pursue my passions.<\/p>\n

What’s even BETTER is this…<\/p>\n

Make money with your passions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Doing that makes life ROCK.<\/p>\n

Putting off what you want to do until \u201csomeday\u201d makes life suck.<\/p>\n
