…this Christmas Eve?<\/p>\n

Me and the Colombiana?<\/p>\n

We\u2019re going out to eat at a little family owned restaurant near the Doberman Dan compound.<\/p>\n

They stay open Christmas Eve for folks like us who have no kids and no family that live nearby.<\/p>\n

So we don\u2019t have to cook, clean dishes or put up with leftover turkey for 9 months.<\/p>\n

Anyhoo… whatever you do, I hope it\u2019s done with people you love.<\/p>\n

Yeah, I know. Family can be a pain in the ass.<\/p>\n

Especially that intolerable brother in law of yours who always spouts off about how all your political beliefs are wrong.<\/p>\n

Let it go in one ear and out the other.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t try to change him. It\u2019ll just piss him off and probably ruin everybody\u2019s holiday.<\/p>\n

And he\u2019ll never change anyway.<\/p>\n

Instead, just love him.<\/p>\n

After all, love isn\u2019t an emotion.<\/p>\n

Love is a decision.<\/p>\n

And yes, if you decide to, you can even love your obnoxious brother in law.<\/p>\n

I call it \u201clove in action.\u201d (With a tip of the hat to a brilliant composer, Todd Rundgren.)<\/p>\n

One last tip.<\/p>\n

A pragmatic and practical one:<\/p>\n

Jack Daniels can help make asshole relatives more tolerable.<\/p>\n

Temporarily.<\/p>\n

So have a drink on me.<\/p>\n

Or two.<\/p>\n

P.S. When I was a little kid, on Christmas Eve my family always went to the candlelight service at United Methodist Church in front of Lake Anna in Barberton, Ohio.<\/p>\n

They would turn out all the lights and the pastor would light his candle. Then use the candle to light someone else\u2019s candle… who would do the same.<\/p>\n

And so on.<\/p>\n

When all the candles were lit in the congregation the entire church was lit up.<\/p>\n

Symbolic stuff, ya know.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t really get it. I just thought it was cool my mom let me have a lighted candle so I could play with the melted wax.<\/p>\n

I get it now.<\/p>\n

And I\u2019ve dedicated my life to being a candle lighter.<\/p>\n

\u2018Cuz I\u2019ve seen that when I light just one candle…<\/p>\n

…if I\u2019ve\u00a0chosen the right person…<\/p>\n

…it\u00a0can bring light to hundreds…<\/p>\n

…thousands…<\/p>\n

…and maybe… just maybe… before we\u2019re done…<\/p>\n

…even\u00a0MILLIONS.<\/p>\n
