For a lot of reasons.<\/p>\n

But mostly because Dan is the original inspiration and mentor that got me started on this now 26-year direct response marketing journey.<\/p>\n

I shudder to think where I\u2019d be if it weren\u2019t for that. I can\u2019t even IMAGINE spending the last 26 years in a j-o-b.<\/p>\n

Anyhoo… Dan asked me if I could share only one thing about copywriting, what would it be?<\/p>\n

First of all, those \u201cone thing\u201d questions are tough. Because there’s rarely just “one thing” in anything.<\/p>\n

And trying to sum up 26 years experience \u201cin the trenches\u201d writing copy… most of that backed with my own money for my own businesses… and the success or failure determined whether I would eat and pay my rent… or go hungry and be forced to live in my car (which happened)…<\/p>\n

Answering that, for most mere mortal copywriters, would be a supremely difficult task.<\/p>\n

But not for me.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t even hesitate in answering.<\/p>\n

The big idea is the \u201cone thing\u201d of copywriting.<\/p>\n

Or as my mom from Mississippi would have said, the one \u201cthang.\u201d (Gawd, I miss her.)<\/p>\n

Look at any successful ad, sales letter or marketing campaign. You\u2019ll see that the foundation of its success is a unique and compelling big idea.<\/p>\n

A hook that captured the market\u2019s attention, made them want to find out more and then got them to buy. In some cases, by the thousands of tens of thousands.<\/p>\n

Or in the case of \u201chelp I\u2019ve fallen and I can\u2019t get up\u201d… by the MILLIONS.<\/p>\n

Listen, I\u2019ll be the first to admit it. Coming up with successful \u201cbig ideas\u201d is NOT easy.<\/p>\n

But getting that 100% right is CRUCIAL.<\/p>\n

Because if you don\u2019t completely nail the perfect big idea, NOTHING you write will make your copy convert.<\/p>\n

Conversely, I\u2019ve seen even half-assed copy convert like crazy when the copywriter came up with the right big idea at the right time.<\/p>\n

Finding the right big idea for your copy is the most challenging and frustrating part of our job as marketers and copywriters.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the ideal way of coming up with your big idea:<\/p>\n

You dig into all your research, like a prospector searching for the Hope Diamond.<\/p>\n

You cram it all into your nutty noggin, as fast as possible. In one fell swoop if you can.<\/p>\n

Then you get away from it so you can go and…<\/p>\n

Goof off!<\/strong><\/p>\n

And you continue to not<\/em> think about it, involving yourself in other activities to distract your mind.<\/p>\n

Until, in a flash of brilliance, while you\u2019re showering, watching TV or doing the horizontal bop with your significant other… (actually you could be doing all three at the same time)…<\/p>\n

…the perfect big idea pops into your head.<\/p>\n

And it may take days, weeks or even months for that process to happen.<\/p>\n

So what if you don\u2019t have the luxury of weeks or months to allow your cantankerous cranium to work on coming up with your big idea?<\/p>\n

What if the Sheriff\u2019s Deputy is nailing a foreclosure notice on your front door and you need to make money right frickin\u2019 NOW?<\/p>\n

Or what if you\u2019re a freelancer, your client has already started sending opt-ins to his launch videos, he\u2019s telling 50,000 people on his list that the sales page will be up in three days… but you still have no clue about your big idea.<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t have a proven, systematized, step-by-step way of coming up with the perfect big idea for your copy… you\u2019re screwed.<\/p>\n
