I probably could\u2019ve gotten wealthy a lot younger, been a lot happier and I\u2019m pretty sure I wouldn\u2019t have gone through two divorces. (Although divorce #1 WAS one of the best things that ever happened to me, so no regrets there.)<\/p>\n<p>After all these decades, my grandpa\u2019s poem came to life for me recently.<\/p>\n<p>I held a small group event this summer.<\/p>\n<p>My personal focus at the event was to just listen.<\/p>\n<p>A special kind of listening&#8230; with an extra little secret ingredient.<\/p>\n<p>And the results were amazing.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve never conducted, attended or experienced anything like it.<\/p>\n<p>Not even back in my younger days when I used to go to church.<\/p>\n<p>It was life changing.<\/p>\n<p>Especially for me.<\/p>\n<p>One of the attendees described it as a \u201cspiritual experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Was it something I presented, did or said?<\/p>\n<p>Nope.<\/p>\n<p>My mouth was shut 90% of the time.<\/p>\n<p>I listened.<\/p>\n<p>REALLY listened.<\/p>\n<p>Cuz what comes out of people\u2019s mouths only tells a part of the story.<\/p>\n<p>You see, true listening is a \u201cuse all your senses\u201d thang.<\/p>\n<p>And REALLY listening, using my secret sauce, is a \u201cuse all your senses, heart, soul and intuition\u201d thang.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody listens to anybody anymore.<\/p>\n<p>And people are DYING for somebody who will.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re up to the task, you\u2019re gonna see amazing things come from it.<\/p>\n<p>A great book about this is \u201cJust Listen\u201d by Mark Goulston.<\/p>\n<p>Already got too much in your \u201cto be read\u201d stack? Then all you REALLY need to do is read the title. You can put it into practice immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Life just seems to go much more smoothly this way. And it takes all the pressure off you in business and social situations.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to try and be interesting.<\/p>\n<p>Or carry the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Just ask a couple questions and shut your big pie hole.<\/p>\n<p>And after practicing this for a while&#8230; if you REALLY listen&#8230; a change starts to happen.<\/p>\n<p>You look at the world&#8230; differently.<\/p>\n<p>You look at people differently.<\/p>\n<p>You look at your role in this world differently.<\/p>\n<p>And&#8230; even in the hardened heart of a grizzled inner city cop&#8230; \u00a0an empathy starts to develop.<\/p>\n<p>And maybe&#8230; just maybe&#8230; the annoying things your dad, mom, brother, sister, friend, spouse or business partner used to do&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;the things that always bothered you or pissed you off&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;don\u2019t seem to have the same effect on you.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, you just see them as a part of their communication process.<\/p>\n<p>So you listen some more.<\/p>\n<p>And you see their heart.<\/p>\n<p>My grandpa was one wise hombre.<\/p>\n<p>I should have listened to him a lot more when he was alive.<\/p>\n<p>But that ship sailed a long time ago.<\/p>\n<p>No matter.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s important is this:<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m listening now.<\/p>\n<p>All the best,<\/p>\n<p>Doberman Dan<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/the-best-ways-to-reactivate-past-customers\/dobedansig\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11365\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11365\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/dobedansig-300x147.jpg\" alt=\"dobedansig\" width=\"132\" height=\"65\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/dobedansig-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/dobedansig.jpg 321w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 132px) 100vw, 132px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>P.S. Right now, I\u2019m sitting on the lanai. The waterfall in the pool is making a sound I find relaxing.<\/p>\n<p>So I\u2019m just sitting here&#8230; listening.<\/p>\n<p>The Colombiana is in the kitchen speaking Spanish with our handyman.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan, one of the young guys who works here on the property (ya see&#8230; I listened when he told me his name the other day) is doing edge trimming and fertilizing the grass. He&#8217;s about a half mile away but I can hear him.<\/p>\n<p>The birds are singing.<\/p>\n<p>I even hear an occasional cow moo a couple miles away.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not quiet&#8230; but it&#8217;s peaceful.<\/p>\n<p>And I feel happy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Listen&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Pax vobiscum.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cA wise old owl sat in an oak.
