{"id":11921,"date":"2015-10-15T04:21:40","date_gmt":"2015-10-15T09:21:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/?p=11921"},"modified":"2015-10-15T04:21:40","modified_gmt":"2015-10-15T09:21:40","slug":"why-i-suck-at-running-a-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/why-i-suck-at-running-a-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I SUCK at running a business&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s an addiction, I\u2019m tellin\u2019 ya.<\/p>\n<p>And I can\u2019t seem to help myself.<\/p>\n<p>After coaching two different groups of people in the \u201cDoberman Dan\u201d way of launching a supplement business this year&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(BTW, so far 80% of my prot\u00e9g\u00e9s have launched&#8230; that is UNHEARD OF in ANY coaching group!)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and seeing a bunch of guys launch with MER\u2019s (media efficiency ratio \u2013<\/p>\n<p>the ROI on ad spend) of 1.8&#8230; 2.0&#8230; and 3.1&#8230; I got bitten by the supplement biz bug again.<\/p>\n<p>So I started a new one.<\/p>\n<p>And after three rounds of testing and tweaking&#8230; then using all that data to crack the code to turning this thang into a runaway 7-figure\/month success&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and spending a month obsessing over and rewriting the ad&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;I sold it to one of my knights in the <a href=\"http:\/\/marketingcamelot.com\/\">Marketing Camelot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It will re-launch next week. And the new owner, the media buyers and I all have big expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhoo, here\u2019s the weird thing:<\/p>\n<p>Sure, I could have just kept the business and re-launched it myself. But after 29 years as a serial entrepreneur and 20 years in direct response I can finally admit to myself&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I SUCK at running a business.<\/p>\n<p>I rock at STARTING a biz. Cuz I EXCEL at the \u201ccracking the code\u201d part&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; coming up with the big idea, the marketing and the copy.<\/p>\n<p>But I suck at the logistical stuff.<\/p>\n<p>I am NOT the dude to be dealing with stuff like keeping up on inventory, looking at balance sheets, running budgets, hiring employees&#8230; all that stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Not to say that someone with a brain and talent for logistical stuff doesn\u2019t bring a lot to the table.<\/p>\n<p>Quite the opposite. That\u2019s a HIGHLY valuable skill set.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just that it ain\u2019t MY skill set.<\/p>\n<p>And it took darn near 30 years to finally admit it.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m the guy you want on your team to create the magic.<\/p>\n<p>But I am NOT the guy to harness that magic and exploit it for all its worth.<\/p>\n<p>A couple points from all this:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>As Dirty Harry said, \u201cA man\u2019s got to know his limitations.\u201d Then don\u2019t do that stuff.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Hire or partner with somebody who is good at what you suck at.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Sounds simple, right?<\/p>\n<p>Simple but frickin\u2019 brilliant I say.<\/p>\n<p>Listen, blow this off as stupidly obvious if you want. BUT&#8230; I\u2019ve lost out on at LEAST 8-figures in my pocket because I tried to do all the stuff I suck at for too damn long.<\/p>\n<p>Do the stuff you excel at.<\/p>\n<p>And one nice little serendipity is this:<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s probably the stuff you enjoy the most.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/the-best-ways-to-reactivate-past-customers\/dobedansig\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11365\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11365\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/dobedansig-300x147.jpg\" alt=\"dobedansig\" width=\"132\" height=\"65\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/dobedansig-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dobermandan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/dobedansig.jpg 321w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 132px) 100vw, 132px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>P.S.
