I just didn\u2019t get it at the time.<\/p>\n<p>But I TOTALLY get it now.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve chosen to be a leader, you no longer have the option of having any REAL relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Allowing people to know the REAL you could hurt them.<\/p>\n<p>Because if you let them know the real you, they\u2019ll see that you\u2019re a real human being.<\/p>\n<p>Flawed and fallible just like everybody else.<\/p>\n<p>And you certainly can\u2019t allow that.<\/p>\n<p>They need you to be perfect.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re not emotionally mature enough to handle the fact that you\u2019re an imperfect human being, just like them.<\/p>\n<p>They need you to be perfect. And they\u2019ll be devastated if they find out you\u2019re not.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, last week, in a moment of extreme emotional desperation&#8230; when I was at one of the lowest points in my life and in need of understanding and empathy&#8230; I dropped my guard and let a few people see that I\u2019m just another imperfect human being.<\/p>\n<p>HUGE mistake.<\/p>\n<p>And I\u2019m afraid I\u2019ve hurt someone I really care about.<\/p>\n<p>You see, the curtain was pulled back and the wizard was exposed for what he really is&#8230; a scared shitless and hurting human being&#8230; just like everybody else.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll regret that the rest of my life.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody wants to see that their \u201cguru\u201d is just flawed and fallible human being, do they?<\/p>\n<p>I should have known better.<\/p>\n<p>I actually thought maybe I could have a few REAL relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Of course not. What the hell was I thinking?<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t risk disappointing anyone.<\/p>\n<p>I totally get it now.<\/p>\n<p>I know my role.<\/p>\n<p>I can NEVER have a real relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Too much is expected of me.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t afford to disappoint anybody&#8230; therefore I can never let anyone get close to me.<\/p>\n<p>I must be perfect. That\u2019s what everybody wants from me.<\/p>\n<p>And to make sure they get what they need from me, I can never allow anybody get close enough to me to discover that I\u2019m actually human.<\/p>\n<p>That way I can never disappoint you.<\/p>\n<p>God knows I never want to do that.<\/p>\n<p>Even if that means I have to spend my life alone.<\/p>\n<p>And die alone.<\/p>\n<p>Just like my mentor.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the heaviest burden I\u2019ve ever borne.<\/p>\n<p>But&#8230; I can no longer run the risk of hurting someone by letting them see I\u2019m human.<\/p>\n<p>This leadership <em>thang<\/em> is a lonely gig. I\u2019ve been injured a LOT because of bodybuilding.<\/p>\n<p>Some pretty damn serious injuries, too.<\/p>\n<p>They all slowed me down from reaching my goals&#8230; or stopped me entirely for a period of time.<\/p>\n<p>Some of those injuries will plague me the rest of my life. (And I can feel each and every one every single morning.)<\/p>\n<p>A dollar short and a day late&#8230; but I discovered I could have avoided almost ALL of those injuries.<\/p>\n<p>And that would have gotten me to my goals a LOT faster.<\/p>\n<p>And with a LOT less pain.<\/p>\n<p>How?<\/p>\n<p>Simple.
