Ever hear of David Garfinkel?<\/p>\n

He\u2019s a copywriter\u2019s copywriter. He possesses a brilliant mind
\ncombined with the ability to craft spellbinding copy.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s a deadly combination.<\/p>\n

Not only that, he\u2019s one of the best teachers and coaches of
\ncopywriting I know.<\/p>\n

His coaching client list reads like a \u201cwho\u2019s who\u201d of A-list copywriters.<\/p>\n

Well actually, on the \u201cwho\u2019s that?\u201d list before coaching with Garf…
\nthen on the \u201cwho\u2019s who\u201d list of A-listers AFTER coaching with Garf.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve personally hired him to look at some of my copy. And now I\u2019m
\nfortunate to call him a friend.<\/p>\n

Anyhoo, Garf and I were jibber jabbering the other day about a mutual
\nclient.<\/p>\n

In addition to being wonderful people to work with, this client provides
\ntons of opportunities for their copywriters to continually improve their
\nskills.<\/p>\n

One of those many opportunities is a weekly 30-minute copy review
\ncall.<\/p>\n

We all receive a successful control from them (in a plethora of markets)
\neach week to study. Then we jump on Go To Meeting and analyze the
\npromo.<\/p>\n

There are some brilliant copywriters on that call each week. If this were
\nsomething open to the copywriting world (it\u2019s not… it\u2019s invitation ONLY)
\na monthly price point of $1,000\/month would be a screaming bargain.<\/p>\n

THAT\u2019S how valuable this is.<\/p>\n

And frankly, if a clever copywriter can\u2019t take what they learn each week
\nand use it to make at LEAST an additional $1,000\/month…<\/p>\n

…they are a bovine, clodpated, citified moron. In my most humble (but
\naccurate) opinion.<\/p>\n

(I LOVE using obscure movie references! Occasionally somebody even
\nrecognizes them and emails me. Love that, too.)<\/p>\n

So imagine my amazement when I get a group email from this client to all
\nthe copywriters… in house and freelance… saying that a lot of them aren\u2019t
\nattending this meeting.<\/p>\n

I was dumbfounded by this.<\/p>\n

When I was invited to participate last year, I felt like I was now… after 20
\nyears of writing copy… in the \u201cin\u201d crowd of A-listers. I felt like…<\/p>\n

\u201cYES! 20 long years and at LEAST 17,000 hours (probably more)
\nof sweating frickin\u2019 BLOOD on the page… and I have finally arrived!<\/p>\n

“And even more amazing… this \u201cgold mine\u201d client is allowing little ole me
\nweekly access to the keys of the copywriting kingdom.”<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t have been more thrilled and excited.<\/p>\n

I wanted to shout it from the rooftops and brag about it to my family so they
\nwould know I\u2019m not the black sheep loser they\u2019ve pegged me for all these years.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I was so amazed that a lot of their copywriters blow off this meeting.<\/p>\n

Then I got to thinking. (I probably do that too much.) It all makes perfect sense
\nactually.<\/p>\n

No matter what you do, you can\u2019t seem to get away from the Pareto principle.<\/p>\n

The ole 80\/20 rule.<\/p>\n

And the 20\/20 rule. (More about that in a sec.)<\/p>\n

In spite of this client being the BEST copywriting gig out there… (I know that
\nfor a fact, dude. I\u2019ve been in this game 20 years and I know EVERYBODY)…<\/p>\n

… and even though they provide a plethora of opportunities for their copywriters
\nto constantly get better so they can excel…<\/p>\n

…only 20% of them are responsible for 80% of the client\u2019s income.<\/p>\n

And here\u2019s an interesting fact:<\/p>\n

The 20% of the 20% (the top 4%) are the people I see on that copy call… week in
\nand week out.<\/p>\n

Hmmmm…<\/p>\n

Makes me wonder if maybe… just maybe… a few of those 80%\u2019er guys and gals
\nwould get up off their asses and show up on those copy calls…<\/p>\n

…with an open mind, positive attitude…<\/p>\n

…with a willingness to humble themselves and learn…<\/p>\n

…they could possibly join the high earning 20%\u2019ers.<\/p>\n

AND… maybe… just MAYBE…<\/p>\n

…if they would actually stop hiding behind their computers, participate in those calls
\nand ask questions…<\/p>\n

… AND keep stepping up to the plate and swinging for the fences…<\/p>\n

…perhaps… possibly… perchance…<\/p>\n

…they could earn a spot in the top 4%.<\/p>\n

I believe any of them could do that.<\/p>\n

The question is, WILL they do it.<\/p>\n

Their employer\/client certainly is providing every possible opportunity for that
\nto happen. But amazingly, only a small percentage of them seem to be taking
\nadvantage of it.<\/p>\n

This is not a copywriting thang. It\u2019s a human being thang.<\/p>\n

And it totally explains why only 20% of the population earns a majority of
\nthe money. AND… why only 4% of the human population makes the big
\nbucks.<\/p>\n

Bottom line…<\/p>\n

It ain\u2019t a skillset issue.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a MINDSET issue.<\/p>\n\"dobedansig\"<\/a>\n
