Your Last Excuse
"Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today"
- John Lennon
Dear Friend,
Can we talk like intelligent and rational human beings for a few minutes today?
Actually, I doubt it.
Most people cannot.
Seriously… in my experience, something like 98% or 99% can't have a rational conversation about ANYTHING that contradicts their lifetime of wrong programming.
So I'm taking a big risk today publishing an article only for that 1% to 2%.
It's going to be completely over everybody else's head.
Here's how you'll know if you're NOT part of that elite 1 to 2%?
That's easy…
If you feel anger as a result of reading this post… then you're part of the 98%.
Don't feel bad. I spent a large portion of my life there, too.
But if you're not able to make some changes, you'll probably NEVER be able to break free from the strongholds that are keeping you from the success you desire.
In spite of knowing only about 2% of of the population will get my point today… and I'm going to receive hateful comments from the clueless 98%… what I'm trying to share with you is so extremely urgent and important… I'm willing to take the heat.
By the way… that's why they say you should never talk about politics or religion. For some reason, those two topics trigger the most irrational reactions… even from supposedly intelligent human beings.
The very SECOND you bring up either of those topics, the 98% shut down the part of the brain that can analyze new incoming data and think rationally… and just start spewing all the pre-programmed ideas and "beliefs" unknowingly programmed into them since birth.
They have no idea WHY they believe what the believe and no credible evidence whatsoever to back it up. But they will VIOLENTLY oppose you if you present them with any idea counter to their installed mental meta-programs… regardless of the credible and proven evidence presented.
Even if it's only a hypothetical idea like the one I'm going to propose today.
In some cases, their reaction will be so strong, they'll get physically violent with you.
Even try to maim or kill you.
Crazy, isn't it?
Want to see this in action for yourself?
Just ask somebody why they're a member of whatever political party they're affiliated with.
They have no idea. Hell, they don't even know the most basic tenets their party stands for!
They can't provide one single logical reason why they're a member of that particular party.
The only ones I've ever consistently received logical and intelligent answers from were Libertarians.
Look, I'm not a member of any political party… for reasons almost nobody understands. So if you think I'm promoting the Libertarians and putting down Democrats or Republicans, you're mistaken.
But I'm betting if you're a typical Democrat or Republican and you suspected I was about to start slamming your party… the hair on the back of your neck started to stand up a little bit.
There is no logical reason for that kind of reaction… yet your adrenalin started pumping into your bloodstream and you started feeling that "fight or flight" reaction… a physiological reaction designed to save your life from grave physical danger.
And you started having that reaction because you thought I was going to say your political party sucks!
Silly, huh?
Well, if something as silly as that gets the hair on the back of your neck standing up… stick around 'cuz now I'm REALLY gonna piss you off!
I swear to you… my goal today isn't to make you mad.
Actually, my goal today is a lofty one. I want to make you do something contrary to your life-long programming…
Think Logically!
The 98% (actually, it's probably more like 99.9%) have never been taught to think.
They've been trained through rote memory to parrot back a series of pre-approved thoughts and beliefs programmed into them since birth.
They THINK their thoughts and beliefs are theirs… but in reality they don't have anything even RESEMBLING a coherent, congruent and logical life philosophy.
And there's a perfectly good reason for that.
A coherent, congruent and logical life philosophy requires a lot of rational thinking. And unfortunately a whole slew of forces have been at work to train that ability out of you since you were old enough to walk… ESPECIALLY if you went to public school.
Heck, it takes constant thought and vigilance just to MAINTAIN a coherent, congruent and logical life philosophy. Developing one after a lifetime of bad programming takes almost super-human effort!
Want an example of the kind of vigilance you need to maintain a coherent, congruent and logical life philosophy?
Here's one from yours truly…
A couple months ago I discovered information about the "Brown Bailout". Have you hear of that?
Allegedly, UPS is doing some sneaky things in an attempt to maintain dwindling market share.
Instead of providing better service and increasing the value they bring to the world, they've chosen to ask for a government bailout and also bribe politicians (they call it "lobbying" in Newspeak to make it sound more palatable to the sheeple) into crushing their competition by enacting onerous new laws designed to put enormous financial strain on FedEx.
Wanna know what my "logical and rational" initial reaction was?
Righteous Indignation!
I said to myself…
"Screw those slimy bastards, getting in bed with the corrupt politicians. They're as bad as the banksters. From now on I will NEVER ship anything with UPS. In fact, when I order something, if they don't offer any other shipping options, I'm gonna cancel my order."
Yadda yadda yadda.
That's probably a "normal" reaction from an ex-street cop who likes to see rare instances of justice in this world.
But I had to put the brakes on, take a deep breath, step back and re-examine this as a person with the ability to think rationally… without all the emotions that screw up your logical reasoning faculties.
First of all, I had done nothing to further corroborate or deny this story. The only information I had was from an ad on Google Adwords which led to a website sponsored by FedEx.
So there was my first mistake.
Now let's say, for example, that I found numerous credible third party sources that DID corroborate the fact that UPS is involved in dirty dealings. (I have not even looked for evidence that can confirm or deny this story. I'm just using this an example.)
So I stick with my decision to boycott UPS because of this injustice.
That SOUNDS all well and good… but the reality is, that decision doesn't jive with a coherent, congruent and logical life philosophy.
Because if I truly wanted to boycott all the businesses involved in dirty dealings with the federal government…
…I'd have to pull all of my money out of the bank and never use any part of the banking system ever again…
…I'd have to stop buying all my food at the grocery store. I'd have to find a small local farmer who refuses government subsidies and buy all my food from him. Or grow it myself. (Actually, for health reasons, either of those options would be far superior.)
…I'd have to cancel my cable TV service (actually, I HAVE done that), remove all radios from the house… and never buy or read any magazines, newspapers or anything online from any mainstream media outlet.
Plus I'd have to scrutinize every single company affiliated with every single product I buy.
It just ain't possible. And it's a poor use of the limited days I have on this earth.
So my boycott of UPS doesn't make sense to somebody trying to live according to a coherent, congruent and logical philosophy.
Are you beginning to see the level of thinking and vigilance required to maintain a coherent, congruent and logical life philosophy?
Unlike the 98%… you have to CONSTANTLY be on your guard.
Whew! That was a long "set up" for what I'm going to share today.
In spite of all my effort to help you understand this highly urgent and crucial idea, I'll STILL probably get nasty comments from clueless sheeple that just don't get it.
<Long sigh…>
What was it Gary Halbert used to say?
"Don't worry about offending the dogs
when you're selling to the foxes."
Look, I've got real work to do today that pays the bills, so I'm going to try and get to my point here.
I've discovered that most people will do just about anything to keep the curtain from going up on their life.
I've heard ALL of the excuses… and not ONE of them holds water.
I can shoot down every single one of your B.S. excuses for not getting on with living your life to the maximum and pursuing your goals and dreams.
But the one that frosts my little tush the most is the excuse I hear from the self-righteous religious folks…
"Brother, this earthly life is a constant struggle. We're here to suffer. Our reward isn't here… our true reward is in heaven."
Ya know what?
In spite of their smug, holier than thou self-righteousness… that's just another bullshit excuse designed to make themselves feel better about a lifetime of piss-poor decisions… and not having the balls to take action toward a worthy dream or goal.
If you start even just a cursory examination, you'll discover they don't REALLY believe that. They just try to delude themselves and others into believing it so they'll feel better about WASTING their precious life… the ONLY life they have… simply because they don't have any balls… and/or they have allowed themselves to be paralyzed by fear.
Remember, we're having a conversation today like intelligent and rational adults. We're not talking about spiritual issues. That's not my gig. Seek somebody else for that stuff.
Let me take this whole "our reward isn't here on this earth" excuse one step further.
Do you think it makes sense to give up on a life well-lived now… for the hope of an afterlife you have no credible evidence to prove really exists?
Yes… yes… I know. You have FAITH it exists.
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for,
the evidence of things not seen."
- Hebrews 11:1
But we're examining this issue today as logical and rational human beings… NOT spiritual human beings.
And don't forget… I was a cop for 12 years and spent a lot of time in court. I learned it's not what you know or what you think you know… it's what you can PROVE.
And you can't prove that you have a better life to look forward to after you die. At least not with any evidence that would be considered credible by any court or scientific method.
You've never seen this after-life and neither has anybody else who is still alive.
Oh sure, there are people who CLAIM to have seen it. (A few of them write books about it and make millions.)
I'm just saying you have no credible evidence of it.
A 2,000+ year old book with somewhat corroborating testimony?
Nope.
That's what's considered "hearsay evidence" and is not admissible in any court.
Do you have three or more credible and sober witnesses who have actually witnessed this afterlife and can corroborate their findings?
Do you have expert witnesses, well versed in issues of heaven and the afterlife who have been there and returned and can show physical evidence?
No, you have none of that.
Well then, do you think it makes sense for you to decide to suffer and be miserable and deny your God-given abilities to enjoy a great life right now… when all the evidence points to the fact that this is the only life you're ever going to have?
No!
Only a complete idiot would do that.
But it sure looks like God
made a LOT of idiots, doesn't it?
If this evidence is true and this really is the only life you'll ever have… you have screwed up royally by pissing it away on triviality, making excuses and never attempting anything great.
On the other hand…
…If there really is a heaven (like so many of us take on faith)…
…You don't use that future hope as an excuse to be a loser in this present life…
…You have the courage to fulfill your God-given potential of creating the kind of life you consider successful (whatever that may be to you)…
…You live for and enjoy TODAY… while working for a better tomorrow…
Then you win BOTH ways:
- You have a great life in this world, engineered and created by your own design…
- You have an even BETTER life in the afterlife!
Now don't go sending me nasty comments accusing me of being a Godless atheist. (You'd be quite mistaken.)
I'm just trying to kill that one last excuse that may be holding you back from the massive potential you've been blessed with… and may be depriving you of the maximum joy you COULD be experiencing from this life… right here and now.
If what you got from this message is that I don't believe in God and heaven, then you're pretty much beyond hope… and I'm actually a little surprised you're even literate.
Just like John Lennon, I did NOT say "there is no heaven."
I said imagine with me for just a sec… that there's no heaven… and all we have is the here and now.
If that were true… what would you change about your life… right now?
Kinda changes your perspective a little, doesn't it?
P.S. I realize I've spent the last few weeks talking more about success philosophy than the actual down and dirty entrepreneurial "gettin' it done" stuff.
The thing is, the DOING is only about 25% of it.
Getting your head right is the most important part.
But don't worry, next week I'll get into some more nuts and bolts stuff.
See ya soon.

You said…
"And unfortunately a whole slew of forces have been at work to train that ability out of you since you were old enough to walk… ESPECIALLY if you went to public school."
Trouble is private schools and home schoolers have the same agenda as the guvment schools… they still want to push their beliefs on the kids they teach.
Fact is, we ain't logical creatures. And no matter how hard you try to think logically, it ain't gonna happen on a consistent basis. Because even our logic is biased by both nature and by nurture.
Other than that, I'm still hanging around listening to your rants…
By the way, when are you gonna get the guts to say something really controversial?
Wow, Dan, you were really going for some controversy today. Talked about religion and politics in the same post. I think the only other things you missed were sex and racial issues, both always issues with slight emotional charges (note the sarcasm in that last part).
I heard someone say recently that those who say they keep waiting on God for direction are using that as a pious-sounding excuse for not doing anything, when, in reality, they lack the faith to take action, trusting that they are being led by God and that God can straighten them out.
Which is funny, if you think about it, the idea that God can get you to an afterlife, but can't straighten you out in this life.
It makes more sense to me to pray to be led, then take action and trust that He is leading you and will straighten you out if you make a misstep.
But, then again, I've been working to live from a level of logic and rationalism as I pray that God renew my mind and lead me. I don't think those are contradictions.
Thanks for the post. Makes me want to re-read "Winning Through Intimidation," specifically his Ice-Ball Theory.
- John
I didn't know you were a cop, Dan.
I would accept that prosperity is my birthright.
I kept the cop thing a secret for a long time now. I only revealed it a few weeks ago during a teleseminar.
Our reward? In heaven?
That'd be crowd control at its finest – and most cost-effective.
That way of thinking always made a lot of sense to me, too, John.
It's amazing what you can get people to do when you promise them that.
Dan,
So why stop with the success philosophy stuff? It's great. Nice thinking stuff.
You post also reminds me of the story of Gary Halbert arriving at a seminar with a hat/t-shrit (I forgot which) that was printed with "Clients Suck" – and also telling the crowd this several times to please piss off and leave him alone – and being inundated with requests/ or begs for him to pleeeeze take them as a client …
Sorry Dan, you ain't gonna lose me that fast…I agree with every single thing you said and even if I didn't, it wouldn't make you wrong! Love that stand-up-and-let's-go-to-work mindset. And I'm a pretty spiritual guy but this all makes perfect sense. BTW, there is an assurance, spiritually-speaking, but that doesn't stop a lot of us from being Eeyore. And it's taken me awhile to realize that my mind is so danged powerful it will make me follow whatever I put into it–good or bad. Thanks for the mighty words!
That always worked great for Halbert. I would be too worried it would make everybody hate me and then write nasty blog posts about what a jerk I am.
Actually, I haven't checked lately. There probably ARE nasty blog posts about me.
Thanks for having an open mind, Dave.
You hit the nail on the head with this one Dan. This is the kind of post that makes me glad to be a reader.
I also liked what you mentioned in your previous post about most people believing that a happy successful life is the one where you get told to do all your life, throughout high school, college, and then told what to do the rest of your life by your boss at your miserable job that you hate, then retiring when your 65 and too old to enjoy anything you would have done when you were younger.
I r a leetle bit litterite
You're in rare form today Dan. But, you know what? That's OK. It is a tuff subject to tackle. I'll share a bit of my spiritual side that happened to me when I broke free of a guarenteed 40 hr week, 6 digit job with full benefits. I changed my Living Will because I now want to be cremated instead of buried. A long time ago I bought plots in the little country cemetary that holds the remains of my ancestors. Growing up, I had all these movies programmed into me of what you "should do". Now, I see things very differently. And one of them is that, for me, I just don't see the point of trying to keep my remains intact.
My mother (who was from the deep south) made the decision to be cremated while she was dying of cancer. Her relatives absolutely FREAKED OUT.
I guess they thought she wouldn't get into heaven that way.
BTW, in the fitness business, I have actually seen some e-mails come into customer service almost exactly like "I r a leetle bit litterite". lol
Well Dan,
Interesting post. Religion is a funny thing, on the one hand speaking the tenants of peace and yet some of the most vicious wars in history have been in the name of religion. We all have to find our way I guess.
You know, technology is a great thing and we have progressed a great deal and made great strides in the last 200 years or so. But I think it has a price as big as you are suggesting with religion. Back in the early days everyone was, to some extent, pushed to live life to their best and fullest because a.) if you didn't chances are you didn't make it very long and b.) danger has a way of really spicing thing up in the living department making you relish each and every day. Today however, we have taken away most of that danger to the point you can actually do almost nothing with yourself and still get by, maybe not well but certainly survive. People being what they are, a lot of them take the path of least resistance because it is work doing what you are suggesting and why work if you don't have to?
Progress has removed a lot of the spice in our soup of life and the soup is becoming bland indeed.

My mom died of breast cancer. Our old country doctor in the late 1960's kept saying "lets just watch that lump" and wouldn't even take a biopsy till it was the size of your fist. That was my first awakening as to how the medical community works.
Let's move on to brighter stuff.
Yesterday on the stump teleconference he commented on how many people were on it last week and only a handfull yesterday. So I name dropped you as to why I was there yesterday and asked if he was going to post a replay and he gave out a url to the entire 3 hour recording and transcript.
True. You CAN survive by doing nothing. About half of the people in the US are doing that now… on some form of public dole.
It makes me wonder what's going to happen when the 50% who ARE working get tired of supporting the other 50% sucking at the public teat.
When that time comes, our soup is gonna be spicy again!
I'm so far behind on my e-mails right now. Sending out the link to the replay is on my to-do list for this weekend.
Thank you! I'm glad to have you as a reader.
Dan, as always, your right on the money.
Glad I have been part of this 2% all along.
Now excuse me, I too, have some work to do
Cheers

Hi Dan
I can hear the bleating and gasping already.
The problem with most people is that they have had things too easy.
First the parents dished out like there was no tomorrow, then the employers, and then the government.
Public school de brained them. Later taught by lecturers that have no experience about anything. All book learning. Maybe got an MBA (More Bad Advice).
The typical outcome of that, is that choices were made for them and they liked it. No responsibility.
They have a begging bowl mentality. And that through personal choice.
Typical scenario is the breadwinner gets home from a day on the job. Spews gall about the job and salary and the co workers etc. and then plonks down on a chair expecting to be waited on hand and foot.
In front of the one eyed babysitter. Mental chewing gum is the side dish for dinner.
Meanwhile at work they do just enough not to get fired.
And then play the lotto or other beasts of chance, all the while building and painting all those shiny castles in the air.
And you wanna make 98% think? Don't. They must work for the 2% and make us rich.
Don't let them read "The Richest Man in Babylon" It will endanger their poverty mentality.
If you do, it will make them realize that they permit themselves to be the grist in the mill of somebody else's entrepreneurial dream. By choice. It might wake the desire for independence and, oh my goodness, let them do something stupid like starting a business.
And become pro active in their own lives……and horror of horrors, think!!!
They will feel like a caged lion working for a boss, go out and get independent, and then where will we find another 98%?
The realization that they are ultimately responsible for where they are in life might just jump up and bite them on their furry little butts….or maybe Donner could give them a friendly nip!
Failing that, I have a Jack Russel that will do the job most admirably.
Remote.. remote.. now where is that remote.. I need to see the lotto results.
Rambled a bit, though. 18 hour days in business has that effect sometimes.
It's not my fault! The clients made me do it.
Dude, all I wanna add here is that you ROCK! The down and dirty teaching that you do is absolutely awesome, but I believe you're right…if the head ain't right then neither are the actions…so the philosophy head trip stuff that you're throwin down in this post is of utmost importance and extremely necessary. Keep the philosophy lesssons rolling. Have a GREAT weekend and looking forward to your future posts.
Thanks, Louis.
I'm just trying to pass on the stuff I wish somebody would have assed on to me when I was a rookie entrepreneur.
Thomas, this comment is so good it is worthy of it's own blog post or hard copy newsletter. With your permission, I would really like to reproduce this in a future blog post… or even possibly an offline newsletter I'm thinking about publishing.
I LOVE that Herecletus quote! I started my first DD teleseminar with it.
Thanks for the compliment Dan. You have my unrestricted permission.
This is your life. It's not a dress rehearsal.
The scariest sentence in the English language:
"I'm from the Government and I'm here to help"
Great job Dan!
I have been one of the 2% most of my long life.
I learned as a teenager that religion doesn't equal spirituality and spiritually doesn't equal religion. I did find that religion can equal war and that is not spiritual. I think the most spiritual person I have ever know, never, ever went to church.
Not many people have the guts to print their beliefs and feelings or go against the 98% flow , especially in the USA.
I have found that most religion and politics fits the description, "The blind lead the blind and they all fall in the ditch."
In politics, if you are in office, you are the problem. I started 50 years ago, never voting for an incumbent. They can go in as honest people but never over two years and then they are bought, I mean lobbied.
God gave you life to enjoy. I work smart to enjoy success.
Keep up the good works.

"I’ve discovered that most people will do just about anything to keep the curtain from going up on their life."
Boy … the hair stood up on my arms AND the back of my neck when I read that sentence.
Hit a little too close to home for this near life-long procrastinator.
You must have one hell of a group or membership thing coming.
Absolutely incendiary writing today, Dan.
Kudos
Great post Dan, you been thinking or pondering a lot lately. Dan Przyojski.
Dan,
One thing I'll say is you made me think. You made me realize I've never been part of the 98%, even as a kid. Maybe it was my parents, I don't know. But I've always questioned things, in fact the more people spout something, the more I doubt it.
I have a theory and religion and politics are good examples of it:
A lot of people feel the need to have others believe as they do, even when they have no idea why they believe it. I've had people get very upset with me because I wouldn't change my belief system to match theirs. The bottom line is, if you and I don't agree with their beliefs, some shred of doubt creeps into their very being. And they don't like that.
Keep it comin' Dan! And give Donner a hug for me. Sometimes I miss my dogs.
I never thought about it like that. I always knew people get mad when you challenge them on their beliefs but I never thought that it might be because THEY actually doubt their beliefs.
Good observation, Owen.
Probably too much.
Guess how I know this stuff?
Because I made excuses for YEARS until I finally let my own curtain go up.
I'm just prodding you so you don't wait as long as I did.
"The blind lead the blind and they all fall in the ditch."
Sounds like the place I worked for 12 years.
Nowadays just the word "government" makes me cringe.
When you think about what you said, that most people go through life believing things and not even knowing why, it makes sense that when you challenge their beliefs and their beliefs have no personal foundation, that they're going to feel like someone's shaking their tree. And that scares them. They're afraid they're going to have to dump the old programming and consciously come up with new beliefs. The 98% aren't willing or able to do that.
Owen
Win-Win.
Holy Krap Dan — I agreed w everything you typed.
Wow… someone else agrees with me… that means I'm not the oddball weirdo freak everyone says I am.
Cool
So I guess now you've gotta write about abortion or something…
Hey DD,
Can't shake me that easy, hehehe… having grown up on the buckle of the bible belt in North Carolina it still amazes me that some people have the belief that what they want may not be in harmony with what GOD wants for them. They don't want to take the risk of wanting the wrong thing so they just settle for what comes along. As Earl Nightingale once said, the great majority of men tip toe quietly to the grave yard, what a waste!
“It is, in fact, nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry.." – Albert Einstein
Exactly true Dan, thanks for posting this! I'm glad to report that I passed both test with flying colors! This business philosophy stuff is great, but I'm definitely looking forward to some more nuts & bolts.
Hey Dan!
Let me just say that you gotta have a pair of the biggest bazutos on the internet talking your truth as you've been doing here lately.
But it's not working. See, instead of thinning us out you've actually gained at least one more 1% "believer". I've been hanging around here for months but you flushed me out with this little hot tatter.
I'd like to add something to the stew if I may. Something that I've discovered about how belief is formed. Turns out it is created using one of only two ways:
a) Through a compelling argument (book, story, or great ad copy)
b) Through hard evidence (The kind the courts love)
We all know which one of those two methods the religions of the world (as well as some wacky personal development gurus) use when they talk loud and draw a crowd don't we?
The interesting thing is that a burning belief in just about anything can be created with ideas only. That's because ideas are organized from thought patterns. Thought patterns contain a type of energy charge we call "attitude". The longer the thought pattern the stronger the attitude. If that attitude is in favor of the idea then "boom" you've got a believer that will defend his attitude (even though it's only an implant) quite possibly till death. This is not brain "washing" that's a misnomer, it's brain "jamming".
Right on about the sheeple following along but they really are totally hopelessly and happlessly the "living dead" powered mostly by the Eveready attitudes carefully placed there by those who are unknowingly running on them too.
Don't get me started (Oh, too late, you already did)
Good on ya brother.
Thank you,Dan! I have been a loyal follower of yours for over a year now.No one (Guru-wise)has taken more time, shown more patience, been more encouraging towards me than you.I've gained immense value from this blog.I'm fortunate to also call you, friend! Preach on,brother…

Dan,
Several people I know have experienced tragedy in just the past few weeks (including death, a serious car accident and dismemberment. All of which occurred in separate incidents.) So just today I was contemplating the fragility and brevity of life. Even if you manage to make it to 100 years old, that's a mere 36,500 days (give or take a few days). It would be advisable for us all to do what we want to do now and try to enjoy every moment, because time is running out fast.
Thanks for reminding us (or waking us up. Whatever the case may be).
