It's all about the latest and greatest ladies and gentlemen...

Here is the actual copy from a newspaper ad from August 31, 1861, promoting the latest reason to visit P.T. Barnum’s Museum. Note the word “latest” – because he was in the business of constantly coming up with a new, grander-than-all-others-before attraction, to get locals to part with 25-cents yet again, to come to his museum:

    Greatest curiosity ever exhibited
    First and only…ever seen
    Engaged at an immense cost
    For a short time only

The basics are boring... it's seems that the magic pill will get all the excitement!

Dan,
Great post. Being involved in bodybuilding for 30 years and business for 25 years, I can say you hit the nail on the head.

"But I didn’t start really learning it until I started DOING it."

Right on Dan. I thought I knew a whole bunch of stuff after reading a few books on marketing... but it's a whole new ball game when your own money is on the line!

Doesn't matter how many books you read, how many courses you buy or how many seminars you go to, you don't know ANYTHING until you do it for yourself.

Cheers

Becoming successful by hopping from one how-to program to the next and never actually implementing anything is like me thinking I'm going to catch my tail if I chase it enough.

It's silliness.

Especially since I don't even have a tail.

I've read a lot of the content on this site. I'm working post by post to finish reading all of it soon. You've got my respect for the knowledge you earned, and not for being some book smart keyboard jockey.

In everything I've pursued, I try my best to trace the knowledge I need back to the source, and learn from that. So for direct response copywriting, it's been to the tried and true list of greats like Hopkins, Caples and Collier. I've got a mountain of books I'm reading and re-reading that cost me far less than any of those expensive big-box-o-stuff products by the usual guru suspects.

I'm taking the approach evangelized by Halbert of writing winning sales letters out by hand. I did what he said and put a classified ad in the paper asking for housewives with good handwriting. I'm going through what I call his month of hell, studying his reading list of books and ads, which will culminate in getting one of the classic ads typeset. I'm eating and breathing this stuff.

Why?

When you study the current gurus, and trace their genealogy, it all leads back to those greats, and to a practical application of tried and true principles. Anyone who becomes great at what they do did so through focused, persistent practice and practical application.

"The more you sweat in practice, the less you bleed in battle."

Funny, that's why I won't teach guitar lessons until I start taking them again. I know I'm forgetting some basics about form. Good lesson for me to apply this to my copywriting as well.
